Goodbye Greece, thanks for the memory

Well it was an odyssey. The great underdogs who did the impossible dream of toppling Europe’s elite. Even beat the home team on home territory. What an adventure. What goals, what grit, what machismo, what haircuts. In the end it was the understrength Russians with their deft football reminding everyone that Greek played and won the way English teams once played and sadly for them eventually they get found out by superior close control, movement off the ball, speed of movement and of touch and thought. But for all fans everywhere Greece gave us the one thing that really matters - hope. Ultimately a football fan is destined to be disappointed. For four years the Greeks weren’t. |
