The unlikely sounding proposition of a few months ago has rather more credibility now. And even if neither side actually goes forward or wins Euro 2008, some revision is called for. Putting aside the xenophobic blinkers that all teams facing England are by right of historical longevity secondary feeble foreigners, it is now apparent that McClaren’s England faced two highly capable footballing teams. England lost in Zagreb and Moscow and at Wembley. They also fatally drew against Isreal in Tel Aviv. Which is another way os saying they were crap. The excuses are that they played two very good teams. Russia are still this morning 15/1 to win. Croatia 7/1 which probably says more about the nationality of the bookmakers than the pedigree of the football.
